Everything You Need Under One Roof
To assess the damage and identify the root cause of dry rot, a licensed contractor will conduct a thorough inspection of the property.
Dry rot can severely weaken the wood’s structural stability if left untreated. To address this issue, our licensed contractor will thoroughly evaluate the damage and recommend the necessary repair measures.
To prevent dry rot, it is important to locate and remove the source of water intrusion as it relies on moisture to grow.
To eliminate any remaining fungus and prevent its return, exposed wood is treated with wood preservatives and fungicides.
Our team of experts will meticulously remove any damaged wood along with the surrounding healthy wood to guarantee the complete elimination of fungus and rot.
Finally, we will use a wood hardener to strengthen the wood, fill any gaps or imperfections, prime the surface, sand it, and then proceed to paint the repaired areas.
Many homeowners do not realize they have a rot problem until it has already spread significantly. Knowing the early warning signs can save you thousands of dollars in repair costs. Here are the most common indicators of dry rot or wood rot in Bay Area homes:
Soft or spongy wood when pressed with a finger or screwdriver. Healthy wood is firm and resistant to pressure. If exterior trim, window frames, or deck boards feel soft, rot has already begun breaking down the wood fibers.
Cracking, crumbling, or flaking wood surfaces. Dry rot causes wood to lose its structural integrity and break apart into small cube-shaped pieces. This is often visible on fascia boards, porch columns, and exterior door frames.
Paint that is bubbling, peeling, or cracking in specific areas. When moisture gets trapped behind paint, it creates the conditions for rot to develop. Localized paint failure is often the first visible sign of a hidden rot problem.
A musty or damp smell near walls, windows, or in crawl spaces. While dry rot itself does not always produce a strong odor, the moisture that causes it does. A persistent damp smell usually means water intrusion is occurring.
Visible fungal growth. In advanced cases, dry rot produces visible fruiting bodies that look like white, gray, or brown growths on the wood surface. If you see this, the rot is well established and professional repair is needed immediately.
Doors or windows that suddenly stick or do not close properly. As rot weakens the wood around frames, the structure shifts slightly, causing misalignment.
If you notice any of these signs on your San Jose or Bay Area home, contact us for a free inspection. Early detection can prevent a small repair from becoming a major structural project.

"Steve brings mastery and insights to every project he touches. He shares his expertise generously so the home owners know how to maintain the house in the future. We had water damage undiscovered perhaps over many years but we did not know the extent or source of it. The house just seems to "talk to" Steve and he could translate to me exactly what is happening inside of the walls. I have seen many contractors, but Steve without a doubt is the most experienced and most authoritative. Hide"
"We had them go through the outside of our 2000 sq foot home to find and repair any wood rot. The outside walls are siding. He explained that although there is better material available, he may not be able to simply replace a few boards because they would not fit. Between boards, there is a metal plate which in some places fell off. A previous contractor said it could not be replaced. But Steve said this was not true. Steve explained how to look for wood rot as we surveyed the house and also showed where the previous contractor did not use matching wood. He gave us a quote in writing for the wood rot repairs, installing a scaffolding and painting the entire house. He allowed us to use our credit card and provided a link to pay online. This was very convenient. The best part is that his quote did not change by a single penny. Finally, our neighbor complained that one his sprinkler pipes was broken, suggesting it was done by Steve's crew. Steve fixed it right away without questioning whether he was at fault. I definitely recommend Steve for any home repair or improvement. "

The company operates with complete professionalism, including scheduling, billing and communication. I would highly recommend without any reservations.
Dry rot is caused by a specific fungus (Serpula lacrymans) that can spread through wood even in relatively low moisture conditions. It produces a distinctive cracking pattern and can travel through masonry and plaster to reach other wood in your home. Wet rot requires consistently higher moisture levels and generally stays localized to the damp area. Both types weaken wood and require professional repair, but dry rot tends to be more aggressive and can cause more widespread damage if not treated promptly.
Most dry rot repair projects in San Jose take 2 to 5 days for standard exterior work such as trim, siding, and fascia. More extensive repairs involving structural framing or crawl space work may take 1 to 3 weeks. We provide a detailed timeline after our initial inspection so you know what to expect.
Yes. Dry rot can spread through wood and even travel across non-wood surfaces like masonry to reach new wood sources. This is why it is important to address dry rot as soon as it is discovered. During our inspection, we check not only the visibly damaged areas but also surrounding wood and structures to make sure the full extent of the problem is identified and treated.
Absolutely. Repairing rot without fixing the moisture source is a temporary solution that will lead to the same problem recurring. We identify where water is entering, whether it is from leaking gutters, poor drainage, failed caulking around windows, inadequate ventilation in crawl spaces, or other sources. We then correct the issue as part of the repair to prevent future rot.
In most cases, standard homeowners insurance does not cover dry rot repair because insurance companies classify it as a maintenance issue rather than sudden damage. However, if the rot was caused by a covered event such as a burst pipe, the repairs may be partially covered. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to discuss your specific situation. We are happy to provide documentation and estimates that you can submit to your insurer.
